Οι νεαροί διαδηλωτές διαμαρτύρονταν ειρηνικά κατά των νόμων του Απαρτχάιντ, που είχε επιβάλλει το καθεστώς της λευκής μειοψηφίας στη χώρα, εφαρμόζοντας τη θεωρία της ανισότητας ανάμεσα στις φυλές.
